Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has delivered a stark assessment of his own team in a radio interview on ABC Grandstand.<\/span><\/h3>\n

“The reality is we are only an average team,” Hinkley told Gerard Whateley on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Later in the candid interview he said he was annoyed with the team and was giving no thought at all to playing finals this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe at our best can play ok football, but we haven\u2019t consistently played good football all season,\u201d Hinkley said.<\/p>\n

Despite being fancied by many as premiership contenders before the season started, Port Adelaide now have five wins and six losses after losing to Geelong on Friday night.<\/p>\n

Hinkley said it was a \u201creality check\u201d for Port Adelaide.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s typical of a side that\u2019s trying to emerge. We\u2019re one side that at the moment are not dealing with that as well as we\u2019d like.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just not handling the heat that\u2019s being applied upon us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Hinkley said becoming a top club was a hard thing to do, and maintained he wasn\u2019t surprised at Port\u2019s inability to take the next step yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt annoys me, but not so much surprises me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been around a lot and you see a lot of sides try to break through that last part of the lift up the ladder, and it\u2019s the most difficult part.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe competition doesn\u2019t allow you to just take it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hinkley said he wasn\u2019t worried about playing finals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t worry about the end of the season\u2026 We\u2019ve got to worry about competing.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now I\u2019m not one bit concerned about are we going to make finals. I\u2019m more concerned about how we\u2019re going to play against Carlton next week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
