UPDATE, 9.09am — PM Turnbull no longer has majority support: Cormann.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Thursday morning Finance Minister Mathias Cormann told reporters:<\/p>\n

“It’s with great sadness and a heavy heart that we went to see the Prime Minister yesterday afternoon to advise him that in our judgement he no longer enjoyed the support of the majority of members in the Liberal Party party room and that it was in the best interests of the Liberal Party to help manage and orderly transition to a new leader.<\/p>\n

“The reason we came to that view is because of the number of colleagues who came forward, who supported Malcolm in the leadership ballot on Tuesday, indicated to us that they had changed their position.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Liberal challenger Peter Dutton reportedly does not have sufficient numbers to force another party room meeting.<\/h3>\n

On Thursday morning Mr Dutton said he had \u201ccalled the Prime Minister to advise him that it was my judgement that the majority of the party room no longer supported his leadership\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs such, I asked him to convene a meeting of the Liberal Party at which I would challenge for the leadership of the parliamentary Liberal Party,\u201d Mr Dutton said.<\/p>\n

But according to News Ltd, Dutton has only secured 28 signatures of the 43 he would need to bring on another meeting.<\/p>\n

According to reporter Lexie Cartwright:<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s less than the 35 votes Mr Dutton received in the leadership spill on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe needs 43 signatures to take the petition to the Prime Minister before Malcolm Turnbull will agree to call another meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Mr Turnbull refuses Mr Dutton\u2019s public call for another meeting, he will face the party room again on September 11 regardless.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when the regular meeting is scheduled when Parliament resumes in September.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
