When checked against paleoclimatic data records from sources such as tree rings and air bubbles in glaciers, Buontempo said it was &#8220;very likely&#8221; the warmest year in the last 100,000 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On average, in 2023 the planet was 1.48 degrees Celsius warmer than in the 1850-1900 pre-industrial period, when humans began burning fossil fuels on an industrial scale, pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The year 2023 was the planet&#39;s hottest year on record, EU scientists confirmed, and likely the warmest in the last 100,000 years.
