This number fell to 27.37 in 2017 from 27.44 in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>But Medibank\u2019s Dr Linda Swan said the improved BMI score still represented a \u201ccrisis\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote><h3>\u201cAlthough these findings suggest a potential swing in the right direction, it\u2019s important to bear in mind that this data reflects a subtle change over a relatively short period,\u201d she said.<\/h3>\n<h3>\u201cAnd while we hope to see this decline become a more pronounced trend, it\u2019s too soon to tell whether it will represent a meaningful change in our national weight over time.<\/h3>\n<h3>\u201cIn the meantime, it\u2019s important all Australians take steps to maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet to help keep their weight in check.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Medibank Better Health Index finds Australians are carrying an extra 189,000 tonnes of weight, an extra 16.7 kg per person, with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SthAus?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SthAus<\/a> above the national average <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FIVEAANews?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FIVEAANews<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FXwEzCS8qB\">pic.twitter.com\/FXwEzCS8qB<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Matthew Pantelis  (@MatthewPantelis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MatthewPantelis\/status\/1011045057779064837?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 25, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote>&#13;\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the total number of overweight Aussies has fallen, the proportion of overweight or obese South Australians is above the national average.
