Officers then called the RSPCA to help the rabbit, which had been left inside a pink sports bag and appeared unharmed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the first job of this kind that I\u2019ve come across in my 26 years of service with RSPCA,\u201d rescue officer Nalika Van Loenen said on Thursday.<\/h3>\n
\u201cThe young male rabbit is clearly very well socialised and cared for. He is even harness trained.<\/h3>\n
\u201cThe police had put him in a large box and gotten some carrots from Subway, so he had some fresh shredded carrot to munch on while they waited for me to arrive.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The RSPCA is now appealing for information from anyone who may know how the Dwarf rabbit, which is about 1 year old, came to be dumped at the airport.<\/p>\n
\u201cA couple of scenarios came to mind,\u201d Nalika said. \u201cHis owner could have been leaving the country and knew by leaving their pet in a populated area he would be found and cared for.\u201d<\/h3>\n
\u201cOr they may have been planning on smuggling him on board a plane, but backed out at the last minute.<\/h3>\n
\u201cThe pink Lorna Jane bag is very distinctive, so we really hope someone noticed it and saw something.<\/h3>\n
\u201cRabbits are prey animals so they do get scared and stressed easily. He would have been very frightened.<\/h3>\n
\u201cThe humane decision would have been to take the rabbit to an animal shelter during opening hours, where there are people who have the knowledge and capacity to take good care of them.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n
