535 fines and cautions were handed out in 2016, compared to 266 in 2012.<\/p>\n
But according to law expert Karen Stanley, most people don\u2019t even know that running a yellow is an offence.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cThe reason for this law is to prevent people speeding up as they approach yellow traffic lights,\u2019\u2019 Ms Stanley told The Advertiser<\/a>.<\/h3>\n
\u201cCars coming in the other direction wanting to turn right tend to bank up in the intersection, waiting for a break in traffic.<\/h3>\n
\u201cEveryone knows that going through a red light is an offence.<\/h3>\n
\u201cEveryone knows that speeding is an offence.<\/h3>\n
\u201cHowever, most people don\u2019t know that going through a yellow light is also an offence.<\/h3>\n
\u201cThe yellow light rule is taught to learner drivers, so I think most younger road users would know the law, but people in their 40s and over, who weren\u2019t taught that going through a yellow light is an offence, it could come as a surprise.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
