{"id":125214,"date":"2025-04-07T13:59:40","date_gmt":"2025-04-07T04:29:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/?p=125214"},"modified":"2025-04-07T13:59:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T04:29:42","slug":"national-parks-issue-statement-after-sea-lion-was-killed-on-motorway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/national-parks-issue-statement-after-sea-lion-was-killed-on-motorway\/","title":{"rendered":"National Parks Issue Statement After Sea Lion Was Killed On Motorway"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>National Parks and Wildlife are blaming a \u201cfreak accident\u201d after a sea lion was hit and killed on an Adelaide road.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Warning: graphic video<br><br>What appears to be a dead seal is causing traffic delays on the North-South Motorway. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qbD6USRPQJ\">pic.twitter.com\/qbD6USRPQJ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; FIVEAA (@1395FIVEAA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/1395FIVEAA\/status\/1908996077157748879?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 6, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to statement from the department:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Australian sea lion has died after being struck by a vehicle on the North South Motorway, near the Port River Expressway at Dry Creek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small population of Australian sea lions are often seen at the breakwater walls at Outer Harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is incredibly rare for the sea lions to swim into the Barker Inlet, let alone venture this far inland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">National Parks and Wildlife Service received a report on Sunday 6 April that a sea lion had been seen in mangroves and near a bridge below the North South Motorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An inspection of the male animal found it appeared to be in good health, was not near the edge of the road and was in no immediate danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Male Australian sea lions are large, powerful, and at times aggressive animals that can weigh up to 300kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attempting to move a sea lion of this size would have created a high level of risk for the animal and staff. In most cases, animals return to their usual habitat on their own.
