Commuters are questioning the value of new ticket gates at Noarlunga Centre that have been installed alongside an open gateway.<\/h3>\n

The electronic gates were part of a $2.1 million state government plan to reduce fare evasion, but some passengers are already reporting seeing people ignore the machines.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey will pretty much be redundant when they are not manned,\u201d Robin Lewis has told The Advertiser<\/a>, \u201cfrom the first train in the morning to the last in the afternoon.\u201d<\/h3>\n

\u201c(The government) can\u2019t get this right.<\/h3>\n

\u201cI do think it\u2019s a waste of money.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But a Transport Department spokesman defended the gates, which have also been installed next to an open entrance at Salisbury station.<\/p>\n

\u201c(The department) does not release publicly details of security arrangements, however, the introduction of these gates (is) providing a significant deterrent for fare invaders,\u201d the spokesman said.<\/h3>\n

\u201cIt has resulted in a significant increase in the security presence at the station.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
