Qantas announced on Monday that it will start flying directly to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide and Melbourne.<\/h3>\n

The flights will start in December and coincide with an $18 million upgrade of the airport on the island.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cKangaroo Island is already one of our state\u2019s most popular destinations and now thousands more people from South Australia, interstate and overseas will get to experience one of our great natural wonders,\u201d Premier Jay Weatherill said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTourism is one of our state\u2019s great growth industries and our partnership with Qantas will deliver even more jobs and economic growth for South Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n

QantasLink will fly to KI three times a week from Adelaide, increasing to five flights a week from summer to Easter — there will also be three flights a week from Melbourne during the summer holiday season.<\/p>\n

QantasLink boss John Gissing said he was excited to add KI to the airline\u2019s network:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cKangaroo Island is just a short hop away from the mainland. With natural beauty and unique wildlife, the Island has huge potential for growth as a tourism destination and is a fast-growing premium travel market.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur flights will make Kangaroo Island more accessible, saving travel time and providing a new opportunity for our 11 million frequent flyers to use their points.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to acknowledge the support of the South Australian Government, Adelaide Airport and the Kangaroo Island Council in helping make these new services possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The new flights will compliment existing flights offered by Rex and the SeaLink ferry service.<\/p>\n
