{"id":15350,"date":"2017-05-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/premier-apologises-over-oakden-scandal\/"},"modified":"2017-05-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-05-01T00:00:00","slug":"premier-apologises-over-oakden-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/premier-apologises-over-oakden-scandal\/","title":{"rendered":"Premier apologises over Oakden scandal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has apologised to the residents of a state run nursing home and their families, after a damning report on the quality of care at the facility.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/au\/podcast\/david-and-will\/id1167323375?mt=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>David and Will podcast on iTunes here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr Weatherill returned from holidays on Monday and has reiterated an apology made by Mental Health Minister Leesa Vlahos over the poor treatment and potential abuse of elderly dementia patients at the Oakden facility.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is deeply distressing,&#8221; he told reporters at the Adelaide Airport before flying to the APY lands in the state&#8217;s north to take charge of a country cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m deeply sorry to those families and those residents that they experienced that abuse, that they experienced that neglect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He says Ms Vlahos, who has resisted calls from the opposition for her to quit, has his full support and should be acknowledged for initiating an inquiry that has revealed &#8220;the depth of the concerns at this institution&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She has shone a light on this facility and it&#8217;s revealed these very uncomfortable truths about the way this facility has been operated,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she has my full support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he said it is &#8220;disturbing&#8221; that mechanisms in place to safeguard the wellbeing of residents at facilities like Oakden did not fully reveal the issues there before Ms Vlahos decided in December that an inquiry was needed.<\/p>\n<p>The inquiry, conducted by SA&#8217;s chief psychiatrist, uncovered the rough handling of patients, an excessive use of restraints, and a concerning level of injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Releasing it in April, Ms Vlahos said a culture of cover-up existed at Oakden and apologised for the treatment of patients.<\/p>\n<p>She said the facility will close, with residents to be transferred to alternative mental health or aged-care facilities over the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition, medical groups and some families have accused the government of ignoring previous warning about care at the home.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Weatherill said Ms Vlahos responded properly to a complaint about Oakden in 2014 but was given inaccurate advice at the time from SA Health.<\/p>\n<p>He said there are a &#8220;range of people&#8221; who have been investigated over the issue and referred to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.<\/p>\n<p>The premier said his government&#8217;s policy is to pursue excellence in medical care, ensure patients are treated with dignity and respect.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are our principles, they are the policies of my government, and they were not implemented in relation to this institution,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>-With AAP<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/au\/podcast\/david-and-will\/id1167323375?mt=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>David and Will podcast on iTunes here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>MOST POPULAR<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/david-and-will\/penbo-feels-the-heat-during-david-koch-interview\">PENBO FEELS THE HEAT DURING INTERVIEW WITH DAVID KOCH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/jon-blake\/michael-keelan-wonders-what-it-was-like-to-hear-WWII-was-over\"><strong>CLASSIC FIVEAA SENDUP ON BEHIND CLOSED DOORS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has apologised to the residents of a state run nursing home and their families, after a damning report on the quality of care at the facility.
