{"id":15686,"date":"2017-03-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/james-hird-opens-up-about-time-inside-a-psychiatric-facility\/"},"modified":"2017-03-16T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-03-16T00:00:00","slug":"james-hird-opens-up-about-time-inside-a-psychiatric-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/sport\/james-hird-opens-up-about-time-inside-a-psychiatric-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"James Hird opens up about time inside a psychiatric facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>James Hird says overdosing on sleeping tablets was the moment he realised he could not dig himself out of the hole he was in.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/news\/opinion\/james-hird-i-couldnt-dig-myself-out-of-this-hole\/news-story\/d2982a1a863d85208128be1865252060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hird has published an article in the Herald Sun<\/a> touching on his recent five-week stint in a Melbourne psychiatric facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe words \u2018psychiatric facility\u2019 conjure up images of crazy people strapped to tables or walking around in drug-induced comas,\u201d James wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that the clinic, and others like it, are very different to this and are essential to our community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was life-changing for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hird said his time in Melbourne\u2019s Albert Road Clinic \u201cwas no holiday camp\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEveryone has a breaking point and I reached mine after years of continual stress. I am not ashamed to say that I needed the care I received and without it I do not know where I would be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepression is more than just sadness. It is an all-encompassing, debilitating, real sickness that strikes many people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He said dealing with a fractured skull in 2002 was easier that facing clinical depression:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first call to beyondblue in 2015 was an admission I needed help but it took until January 4, 2017, when I took too many sleeping tablets, to truly accept that I could not dig myself out of this hole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James paid tribute to his family and friends:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOver the past four years, I have been short-tempered, distant, hard to live with, rude at times, and ill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTania, my children, my extended family and friends have loved, supported and cared for me when I didn\u2019t deserve their support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James signed off with a call to bring on 2017 &#8212; \u201cthe year of the comeback\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>MOST POPULAR<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/sport\/the-mistake-that-could-cost-the-adelaide-crows-a-flag\"><strong>THE \u201cERROR\u201d THAT COULD COST THE CROWS A FLAG<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/the-premier-just-tore-shreds-off-a-fed-minister-at-press-conference\"><strong>PREMIER TEARS SHREDS OFF FEDERAL MINISTER AT PRESS CONFERENCE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>James Hird says overdosing on sleeping tablets was the moment he realised he could not dig himself out of the hole he was in.
