{"id":16108,"date":"2017-01-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/wrenching-interview-with-paul-makin-about-the-granville-train-tragedy\/"},"modified":"2017-01-19T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-19T00:00:00","slug":"wrenching-interview-with-paul-makin-about-the-granville-train-tragedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/lifestyle\/wrenching-interview-with-paul-makin-about-the-granville-train-tragedy\/","title":{"rendered":"Wrenching interview with Paul Makin about the Granville train tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Journalist Paul Makin spoke with Pilko from Sydney on the 40-year anniversary of the Granville tragedy.<\/h3>\n<p>Paul was the first reporter on the scene that terrible day, which became Australia\u2019s worst rail disaster &#8212; killing 84 people and injuring 210.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got off the train at Granville this morning, I didn\u2019t think it would hit me,\u201d the clearly emotional Paul told Pilko. \u201cBut when I walked off the train this morning\u2026 I had an incredible sense of sadness came over me\u2026 as it\u2019s coming over me now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all of the time that I\u2019ve spoken about this, I have never got this emotional before.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>LISTEN HERE:<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/303419080&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Paul reported from the tragedy after following a police car to the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got here there was probably about three ambulances &#8212; not a huge amount of people at that stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we saw the bridge had come down on these trains immediately I thought what about the poor people in the cars &#8212; several cars had gone down with the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then the realisation that it had crushed carriages three and four\u2026 and it had crushed them down to their wheels, which meant that those people didn\u2019t stand a chance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was at least 20-30 seconds when the passengers would\u2019ve come to a rest and gone, boy, we\u2019re ok, everybody ok? Everybody\u2019s ok. And then suddenly the concrete bridge came down on to that carriage killing all of those people instantly. Those people would\u2019ve thought they made it, but they didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the terrible thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took 48 hours to completely clear the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Paul also spoke about the positive side\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a positive side out of this tragedy\u2026 the bravery, the courage of rescuers.
