{"id":16196,"date":"2017-01-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/astronomers-for-the-first-time-ever-predict-collision-between-two-stars\/"},"modified":"2017-01-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-10T00:00:00","slug":"astronomers-for-the-first-time-ever-predict-collision-between-two-stars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/astronomers-for-the-first-time-ever-predict-collision-between-two-stars\/","title":{"rendered":"Astronomers (for the first time ever) predict a collision between two stars"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Two stars orbiting each other will collide, creating a \u201cRed Nova\u201d visible to the naked eye in 2022, say US astronomers.<\/h3>\n<p>Professor Larry Molnar\u2019s prediction is the first of its kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a one-in-a-million chance that you can predict an explosion,\u201d Molnar said. \u201cIt\u2019s never been done before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s the twist\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If Prof Molnar\u2019s predication is correct, the collision actually occurred more than a thousand years ago.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe star is around 1800 light years. Hence if we are right about the upcoming outburst, it actually occurred 1795 years ago, and the light from the outburst has been travelling toward us ever since,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplosions of this size occur about once a decade in our Galaxy.
