{"id":16258,"date":"2017-01-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/most-people-don-t-know-this-simple-road-safety-rule\/"},"modified":"2017-01-03T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-03T00:00:00","slug":"most-people-don-t-know-this-simple-road-safety-rule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/most-people-don-t-know-this-simple-road-safety-rule\/","title":{"rendered":"Most people don\u2019t know this simple road safety rule"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>More than two thirds of South Australian drivers don\u2019t know the distance to leave between the car in front, according to a new RAA survey.<\/h3>\n<p>The question has been the most incorrectly answered in the RAA driving test since July.<\/p>\n<p>Less than two-thirds of people tested knew the answer &#8212; which is eight to nine car lengths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe three-second rule applies at any speed and creates a safe stopping distance on dry, sealed roads,\u201d police traffic boss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelaidenow.com.au\/news\/south-australia\/survey-shows-sa-drivers-are-putting-their-lives-at-risk-over-failure-to-calculate-safe-distances\/news-story\/ac4532c34bf32325bafef91354a5df6e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Superintendent Anthony Fioravanti has told The Advertiser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn poor, wet or low-visibility conditions, the gap should be increased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelaidenow.com.au\/news\/south-australia\/survey-shows-sa-drivers-are-putting-their-lives-at-risk-over-failure-to-calculate-safe-distances\/news-story\/ac4532c34bf32325bafef91354a5df6e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stats published by The Advertiser<\/a> show the havoc tailgating caused on SA roads last year:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; 4,453 rear end crashes <\/strong>(almost a third of all road accidents).<br><br \/>\n\t<strong>&#8211; Two people killed <\/strong>&#8212; 53 seriously injured and another 1,795 sufferd minor injuries &#8212; in rear enders.<br><br \/>\n\t<strong>&#8211; More than 3,000 people fined <\/strong>a total of $427,000 by police for tailgating.<\/p>\n<p>RAA\u2019s Charles Mountain says many people don\u2019t realise tailgating can cause a fatal crash\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also the element of people tailgating to force the driver in front of them to speed up or reduce the space for someone to change into the space in front of them,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<h3>MOST POPULAR<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/sa-to-cop-the-first-heatwave-of-2017\"><strong>SOUTH AUSTRALIA TO COP FIRST HEATWAVE OF THE YEAR<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/when-cornesy-met-the-stones-a-closed-doors-classic\"><strong>GRAHAM CORNES MEETS THE ROLLING STONES &#8212; A \u2018CLOSED DOORS\u2019 CLASSIC<\/strong><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than two thirds of South Australian drivers don\u2019t know the distance to leave between the car in front, according to a new RAA survey.
