{"id":16305,"date":"2016-12-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/afl-announces-masive-rule-change\/"},"modified":"2016-12-21T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T00:00:00","slug":"afl-announces-masive-rule-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/sport\/afl-announces-masive-rule-change\/","title":{"rendered":"AFL announces MASSIVE rule change"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>There will be no more \u2018third man up\u2019 at ruck contests from next season, the AFL announced on Wednesday afternoon.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afl.com.au\/news\/2016-12-21\/third-man-up-gets-the-chop-in-radical-rule-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to afl.com.au<\/a>, only nominated ruckmen will now be allowed to compete at thrown-ins and ball-ups.<\/p>\n<p>The popular tactic has been widely used by clubs who often like to send a \u2018third man up\u2019 over the top of the main ruck duel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEliminating the &#8216;third man up&#8217; at ruck contests will support the recruitment of tall players and ensure our game continues to be played at the elite level by players of various sizes and differing abilities,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afl.com.au\/news\/2016-12-21\/third-man-up-gets-the-chop-in-radical-rule-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AFL footy operations manager Mark Evans said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Opinions on the tactic have been split when previously raised with AFL coaches.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the FIVEAA sports show, Kane Cornes said the rule change was a \u201cdrastic move&#8230; potentially an over-reaction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But he added: \u201cI like the fact that it brings the dominant ruckman back into play.
