The Islamic State extremist group, via its Aamaq Agency outlet, is claiming responsibility for the attack on a Berlin Christmas market.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The attacker was a “soldier of the Islamic State” who acted in response to calls to target citizens of the coalition of states combating the organisation, it said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The attack at the Christmas market on Monday left at least 12 dead and nearly 50 injured, 24 of whom have been released from hospital, Germany police said.<\/p>\n

The claim, issued via Aamaq and attributed to a “security source,” is typical of how Islamic State has declared itself responsible for previous attacks in Europe.<\/p>\n

Islamic State’s claims came as German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said the perpetrator of the truck attack is probably still on the run and that a suspect arrested in connection with the crime was released due to lack of evidence.<\/p>\n

“That’s why it is true that one cannot rule out that the perpetrator is still at large,” De Maiziere told ZDF television.<\/p>\n

He added police had not just followed a single lead but multiple leads from the start, saying it remained beyond doubt that the truck incident was an attack, but that the motives remain unclear.<\/p>\n

UPDATE, 11:53am — DEATH TOLL RISES<\/h3>\n

Berlin police have raised the death toll to 12 after a truck rammed into a Christmas market.<\/p>\n

The police statement on Twitter also says 48 people were injured, some of them seriously, and taken to hospitals.<\/p>\n

Authorities had previously said that at least nine people were killed.<\/p>\n

Nine people have been killed and up to 50 injured when a truck ploughed into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin in what police suspect was an attack.<\/h3>\n

Police said one of the alleged attackers had been arrested, while another, believed to be the passenger in the truck died at the scene.<\/p>\n

Amateur videos allegedly taken directly after the attack and aired on German TV showed people lying on the ground amid police sirens.<\/p>\n

The truck, which German TV also reported had Polish licence plates, destroyed numerous stands at the market beneath the historic Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church, which is adjacent to one of the German capital’s most popular shopping areas.<\/p>\n

A government spokesman said Chancellor Angela Merkel was being briefed by her interior minister and the Berlin mayor on the situation. Police said there were no indications of further dangerous situations in the area and urged people to stay away from scene.<\/p>\n

Merkel said through her spokesman that she is mourning those killed in the attack.<\/p>\n

“We are mourning the dead and hope the many people injured can get help,” Steffen Seibert said on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Security has also been increased at many of the nation’s Christmas markets this year, according to a recent DPA survey of the markets.<\/p>\n

A large number of streets were cordoned off around the church as police patrolled the area with machine guns.<\/p>\n

Berlin’s mayor Michael Mueller said the situation in the capital was under control.<\/p>\n

“What we are seeing here, is dramatic,” said Mueller at the scene. His thoughts were with the families of the dead and injured, he said.<\/p>\n

Berlin police warned residents to remain indoors and to avoid spreading rumours about the attack at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church.<\/p>\n

If established as a terrorist attack, the incident will come less than six months after two attacks in Germany in July inspired by the Islamic State extremist group.<\/p>\n

A 12-year-old boy with dual German-Iraqi citizenship allegedly attempted to explode a nail bomb at a Christmas market in the western German city of Ludwighafen a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n

The Berlin attack also followed a truck attack by a terrorist on a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice. The July attack, which was claimed by Islamic State, left 86 people dead.<\/p>\n
