{"id":16347,"date":"2016-12-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-12-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/what-the-mckinnon-case-could-mean-for-afl\/"},"modified":"2016-12-19T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-12-19T00:00:00","slug":"what-the-mckinnon-case-could-mean-for-afl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/sport\/what-the-mckinnon-case-could-mean-for-afl\/","title":{"rendered":"What the McKinnon case could mean for AFL"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Tom Rehn looks at what former Newcastle Knight Alex McKinnon\u2019s legal action against the NRL and the player whose tackle left him paralysed could mean for other sports.<\/h3>\n<p>McKinnon was left a paraplegic following a dangerous tackle from Melbourne Storm front-rower Jordan McLean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not known exactly how much he is seeking, but it\u2019s understood to be a seven figure sum &#8212; in the millions of dollars,\u201d Tom said on FIVEAA brekkie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ongoing costs to maintain his health are so astronomical I think he feels like he\u2019s got not other option.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case is the first example of an injured player taking action not only against the offending player, but also the governing body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real test case in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people will be following this really closely from a legal perspective to see where it goes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think about the AFL and the issues they\u2019re going through with concussion at the moment, a lot of players being forced to retire\u2026 you just wonder whether or not that could be something that opens the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJordan McLean, that player who is involved &#8212; you wonder what the emotional toll will be on him\u2026 of course he didn\u2019t meant to do it.
