{"id":16355,"date":"2016-12-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/household-painkiller-slapped-with-huge-fine\/"},"modified":"2016-12-16T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T00:00:00","slug":"household-painkiller-slapped-with-huge-fine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/household-painkiller-slapped-with-huge-fine\/","title":{"rendered":"Household painkiller slapped with a $6m fine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The makers of Nurofen have been fined $6 million for misleading customers with their \u201cspecific pain\u201d range.<\/h3>\n<p>The ACCC took the company to court, arguing customers may have believed they needed to buy multiple products for their different types of pain.<\/p>\n<p>Reckitt Benckiser was found guily and&nbsp;fined $1.7 million earlier in the year, but today that was increased to $6 million after the ACCC appealed.<\/p>\n<p>Appeal Justices Jagot, Yates and Bromwich said the products were \u201cinherently misleading\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContrary to the representations, ibuprofen does not target any particular type of pain. It treats all types of pain precisely the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company said in a statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNurofen did not intend to mislead consumers, however we recognise that we could have done more to assist our consumers in navigating the Nurofen Pain Specific Range.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-12-16\/nurofen-fined-6m-for-misleading-consumer\/8126450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to the ABC<\/a>, 5.9 million packets of the specific pain medication were sold between 2011 and 2015, yielding revenue of $45 million.<\/p>\n<h3>MOST POPULAR<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/rowey-bicks\/it-s-not-called-the-sanfl-anymore\"><strong>BIG CHANGE IN 2017 &#8212; IT\u2019S NOT CALLED THE SANFL ANYMORE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/david-and-will\/penbo-walked-out-of-one-of-the-biggest-movies-of-all-time\"><strong>PENBO WALKED OUT OF THE BIGGEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The makers of Nurofen have been fined $6 million for misleading customers with their \u201cspecific pain\u201d range.
