{"id":16587,"date":"2016-11-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/fremantle-changes-the-date-of-australia-day\/"},"modified":"2016-11-25T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-25T00:00:00","slug":"fremantle-changes-the-date-of-australia-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/fremantle-changes-the-date-of-australia-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Fremantle changes the date of Australia Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Fremantle, WA, has cancelled its usual Australia Day celebrations and will instead mark the day on 28 January &#8212; two days after the rest of the country.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe thought it was time to acknowledge it wasn\u2019t a day of celebration for everybody,\u201d Freo mayor Brad Pettitt has told <a href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/thewest\/wa\/a\/33317969\/australia-day-in-fremantle-is-now-january-28\/#page1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The West Australian<\/a>. \u201cIt was an opportunity for us to come up with a different format on a different day that could be truly inclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were never trying to say to people they couldn\u2019t do anything or shouldn\u2019t do anything on Australia Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s for other people to judge. We\u2019re simply offering what I think is a really good alternative,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The council has been slammed by former West Australian of the Year Robert Isaacs\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shire needs to retract what it\u2019s doing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not in line with community attitudes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI strongly condemn them for this whole thing.
