{"id":17430,"date":"2016-09-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/tap-and-go-cards-lead-to-crime-boom\/"},"modified":"2016-09-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-09-06T00:00:00","slug":"tap-and-go-cards-lead-to-crime-boom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/tap-and-go-cards-lead-to-crime-boom\/","title":{"rendered":"Tap-and-go cards lead to crime boom"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Police say the popularity of \u201ctap-and-go\u201d credit cards has caused a spike in wallet and handbag thefts in SA.<\/h3>\n<p>This type of crime was decreasing from 2011, police say, but has been on the rise in the last couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took a closer look at a random sample of these matters to see if we could find any common links,\u201d Assistant Commissioner Paul Dickson said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisturbingly we found about 40 per cent of those had cards taken which were subsequently used by the thief or a secondary offender to make tap-and-go purchases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven that we believe this category of offending is significantly under-reported, we believe the true level could be much higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is our belief that these thefts are being motivated by low level criminals wanting to obtain these contactless payment cards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese types of incidents are highly disruptive for the victim as they have to cancel and replace the full contents of their wallet or purse.
