Cy Walsh — prosecutors concede Cy was mentally incompetent at time of Phil Walsh\u2019s death.<\/h3>\n

BREAKING<\/strong> — SA\u2019s public prosecutor has accepted Cy Walsh\u2019s NOT GUILTY plea over the murder of his father and former Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh.<\/p>\n

Reporting from Friday morning\u2019s court appearance, Channel 7\u2019s Jane Stinson said the DPP had conceded Cy was \u201cmentally incompetent\u201d at the time of the stabbing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of secret hearings,” Jane said, “but today\u2019s hearing was opened up and the media were finally allowed to report on progress.”<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we learned is that the prosecution has now accepted Cy Walsh\u2019s not guilty by mental incompetence plea.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had actually entered that plea some time ago in the magistrate\u2019s court and said, look, I\u2019m not guilty because I had a mental issue at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s taken some time for the prosecution to assess all the information \u2026 and decide, yes, that is the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jane said there will be another hearing in September.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not enough for the prosecution and the defence to agree that a person has a mental health defence — there needs to be a hearing …<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that the judge can determine whether they are satisfied with that or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phil Walsh was repeatedly stabbed at his Somerton Park home in July last year.<\/p>\n

His son, 27-year-old Cy Walsh, was charged with murder and has been detained in a secure psychiatric facility.<\/p>\n

If the court finds him not guilty of murder by reason of mental incompetence he would be subjected to a lifetime psychiatric supervision order.<\/p>\n
