{"id":17865,"date":"2016-07-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-14T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/dozens-dead-and-more-injured-in-french-truck-attack\/"},"modified":"2016-07-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-14T00:00:00","slug":"dozens-dead-and-more-injured-in-french-truck-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/dozens-dead-and-more-injured-in-french-truck-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Scores killed in France truck attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>UPDATE (3:21pm)<\/h3>\n<p>Australia\u2019s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says three Aussies were injured fleeing the attack, which has now claimed 84 lives while another 18 people are in a critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>Officials have not confirmed the identity of the attacker, who is reportedly a 31-year-old French-Tunisian man.<\/p>\n<h3>UPDATE (9:01am)<\/h3>\n<p>FIVEAA news reports that as many as 73 are now confirmed dead, hundreds more are injured, and local officials are referring to the incident as a terrorist attack and believe the death toll could rise.<\/p>\n<p>There are also reports the truck that was driven into crows of people along the promenade was loaded with arms and grenades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EARLIER<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>An attacker has killed about 70 people and injured 100 when he drove a truck at high speed into crowds watching Bastille Day fireworks in the French Riviera city of Nice, local officials say.<\/h3>\n<p>Police shot and killed the driver, who drove at high speed for more than 100 metres along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront before hitting the mass of spectators late on Thursday, regional sub-prefect Sebastien Humbert told France Info radio.<\/p>\n<p>Broadcaster i-Tele quoted the prosecutor&#8217;s office as saying the preliminary death toll was 60.<\/p>\n<p>Local legislator Eric Ciotti told France Info radio more probably had died. Other officials put the number of wounded at least 100 and possibly more.<\/p>\n<p>Humbert described it as a clear criminal attack, although the driver was not yet identified. Residents of the Mediterranean city close to the Italian border were advised to stay indoors. There was no sign of any other attack.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"804\" width=\"1146\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/screen_shot_2016-07-15_at_8.18.27_am.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Officials were cautious about accounts from bystanders that the lone man driving the truck had also opened fire and, amid chatter on social media of a hostage situation, police called on people not to propagate rumours that were hampering their work.<\/p>\n<p>There is no hostage situation, French interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told BFM TV. &#8220;I can&#8217;t give you information on the man&#8217;s motives yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One woman told France Info she and others had fled in terror: &#8220;The lorry came zig-zagging along the street. We ran into a hotel and hid in the toilets with lots of people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another woman told the station she was sheltering in a restaurant on the promenade with some 200 other people, where things had calmed down about two hours after the incident.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dear Nicois,&#8221; local mayor Christian Estrosi tweeted, &#8220;The driver of a truck appears to have killed dozens of people. Stay at home for the time being. More news to follow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Regional newspaper Nice Matin quoted its reporter at the scene saying there were many injured people and blood on the street.<\/p>\n<p>It published a photograph of a damaged, long-distance delivery truck, which it said was riddled with bullets, and images of emergency services treating the injured.<\/p>\n<p>Social media carried images of people lying apparently lifeless in pools of blood.<\/p>\n<p>Local mayor Estrosi has warned in the past of the risk of Islamist attacks in the region, following Islamic State-inspired bloodshed in Paris and Brussels over the past 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>French President Francois Hollande, who was in the south of France at the time, had hours earlier said a state of emergency put in place after the Paris attacks in November would not be extended when it was due to expire on July 26.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t extend the state of emergency indefinitely, it would make no sense.
