Doctors failed to detect a young girl’s virus in the days before she suffered massive organ failure, an inquest into her death has heard.<\/h3>\n

Briony Klingberg, 10, was seen by several doctors in January 2015 after becoming feverish and unwell at her Adelaide Hills home.<\/p>\n

But none recognised she was suffering from herpes simplex virus which caused her organs to fail, the inquest heard.<\/p>\n

Counsel assisting, Naomi Kereru, on Wednesday said Briony had been vomiting and had trouble swallowing when her parents took her to see a GP.<\/p>\n

Briony was diagnosed with a throat infection and prescribed antibiotics on January 13 but her condition deteriorated.<\/p>\n

She was taken to the Women’s and Children Hospital in Adelaide that night, where doctors detected ulcers on her throat, but was sent home after about an hour.<\/p>\n

Briony’s mother, Bridget Klingberg, said she had trusted that the doctors knew best when it came to treating her normally healthy and active daughter.<\/p>\n

“If there was a view or a concern even that she needed to stay, we would have chosen to stay,” Mrs Klingberg told the inquest.<\/p>\n

“You trust that if she’s sick enough, they would say she needs to stay in.”<\/p>\n

The inquest heard Briony was seen by a different GP the next day, who prescribed steroids to help reduce the swelling in her throat.<\/p>\n

On January 16, she had blood tests taken and received an antibiotic injection from another GP but woke the next day unable to pass urine.<\/p>\n

Mrs Klingberg took Briony back to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital but she suffered a seizure in the carpark and died in the early hours of January 18.<\/p>\n

The herpes virus was not detected until after her death.<\/p>\n

The inquest continues.<\/p>\n
