A number of influential voices have spoken out in defence of Nick Riewoldt after the St Kilda captain was forced to apologise to a club staffer over on on-field outburst.<\/h3>\n

Riewoldt reportedly \u201cdisrespected\u201d Saints marketing manager Kelley Musster and refused to fulfill his post-match duties, which included taking selfies with supporters after the club\u2019s win over Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Riewoldt was disappointed with his side\u2019s performance, despite their win, and he told teammates to \u201cget the f— off the ground,\u201d reports the Herald Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n

St Kilda says Riewoldt\u2019s apology was accepted and he won\u2019t face disciplinary action, but several high-profile personalities have defended the champion player, with Luke Darcy saying he \u201cknew for a fact\u201d Riewoldt had taken the selfies.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Riewoldt] is one of the best people I have ever met in my life,\u201d Darcy said on Melbourne radio.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey won by 46-points over Essendon and part of the marketing program from what I am reading was to go and take selfies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know for a fact that Nick Riewoldt went and took all the selfies but I would have been exactly the same, when you have a win and you\u2019re a club trying to build and you are out there looking like you\u2019ve won the Grand Final.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the captain you go \u2018Get off the ground, boys. Enough. Let\u2019s get in. Let\u2019s sing the song. We\u2019ve got a massive game next week. At the moment we look like it’s Hollywood time,\u2019\u201d Darcy said.<\/p>\n

Neil Mitchell also spoke out in defence of Riewoldt.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou tend to react that way when you care about what you do and put everything into it,\u201d Mitchell said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe’s apologised, good on him for that, but why is this even an issue?<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it relevant that it was a female?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere’s a suggestion the fact Riewoldt clashed with a female staff member is somehow relevant to the club’s bid to get a women\u2019s’ team?<\/p>\n

\u201cC’mon, this is sooky. Far, far too sooky,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
