A Canadian schoolboy has upstaged archaeologists around the world after he discovered what appears to be a lost Mayan city in a central American jungle \u2013 without leaving his bedroom.<\/h3>\n

Knowing the Maya were accomplished astronomers, William Gadoury, 15, studied the diagrams of 22 Mayan constellations and realised the positions of the stars aligned perfectly with the locations of 117 Mayan cities, according to IFLScience<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After making his amazing discovery, William examined another constellation of three stars, two of which lined up perfectly with two know Mayan ruins.<\/p>\n

Figuring the third star could mark the location of an as yet undiscovered settlement, William mapped satellite images from the Canadian Space Agency onto Google Earth.<\/p>\n

What he found appears to be a large pyramid in a southern Mexico jungle, similar to those found elsewhere.<\/p>\n

The site is remote and inaccessible, but researchers from New Brunswick University who are considering organising an expedition have promised to take William along with them if they go.<\/p>\n

IFLScience have translated an interview in French William did with Journal de Montr\u00e9al<\/a>, in which he spoke about his amazing discovery.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs they worshiped the stars, the idea came to me to verify my hypothesis. I was really surprised and excited when I realised that the most brilliant stars of the constellations matched the largest Maya cities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

William was allowed to name the lost city, which he has called K\u2019\u00e0ak\u2019 Chi\u2019, meaning Fire Mouth.<\/p>\n

(UPDATE 4:19PM)<\/h3>\n

A number of sources have disputed that what William found is actually a pyramid. Professor David Stuart from the Mesoamerica Centre at the University of Texas says he decided to set the record straight after he saw the story published by the BBC. Professor Stuart posted on his Facebook page<\/a> that the structure is an old cornfield.<\/p>\n

“The ancient Maya didn’t plot their ancient cities according to constellations,” he wrote. “Seeing such patterns is a rorschach process, since sites are everywhere, and so are stars. The square feature that was found on Google Earth is indeed man-made, but it’s an old fallow cornfield, or milpa.”<\/p>\n
