{"id":18629,"date":"2016-04-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/study-reveals-the-true-effects-of-smacking-kids\/"},"modified":"2016-04-28T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-04-28T00:00:00","slug":"study-reveals-the-true-effects-of-smacking-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/lifestyle\/study-reveals-the-true-effects-of-smacking-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"Study reveals the true effects of smacking kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>A new analysis of 50 years of research has revealed that the more children are smacked, the more they are likely to defy their parents and experience anti-social behaviour and other problems.<\/h3>\n<p>The study has been published in the Journal of Family Psychology and covers five decades of research involving more than 160,000 children, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2016-04\/uota-roh042516.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports EurekAlert!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur analysis focuses on what most Americans would recognize as spanking and not on potentially abusive behaviours,\u201d said one of the study\u2019s authors Professor Elizabeth Gershoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that spanking was associated with unintended detrimental outcomes and was not associated with more immediate or long-term compliance, which are parents&#8217; intended outcomes when they discipline their children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, smacking is linked with increased aggression, mental health problems and cognitive difficulties in children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe upshot of the study is that spanking increases the likelihood of a wide variety of undesired outcomes for children,\u201d said co-author Professor Andrew Grogan-Kaylor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpanking thus does the opposite of what parents usually want it to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Elizabeth Gershoff says that despite no clear evidence for any positive effects of smacking, the practice persists around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe as a society think of spanking and physical abuse as distinct behaviours,\u201d she said. \u201cYet our research shows that spanking is linked with the same negative child outcomes as abuse, just to a slightly lesser degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope that our study can help educate parents about the potential harms of spanking and prompt them to try positive and non-punitive forms of discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What do you think \u2013 agree\/disagree?<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/rowey-bicks\/graham-cornes-takes-aim-at-umpire-favouritism\">GRAHAM CORNES TAKES AIM AT AFL FAVOURTISM<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/david-and-will\/premier-dismisses-interstate-resentment-over-submarines\">PREMIER HITS BACK AT INTERSTATE CRITICS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new analysis of 50 years of research has revealed that the more children are smacked, the more they are likely to defy their parents and experience anti-social behaviour and other problems.
