Australia’s next generation of submarines will be built in Adelaide in partnership with French company DCNS.<\/h3>\n

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters on Tuesday it was a “momentous national endeavour”.<\/p>\n

The recommendation of a competitive evaluation process and the experts who oversaw it, as well as the Department of Defence, was unequivocal.<\/p>\n

The French offer represented the capabilities best able to meet Australia’s unique needs, Mr Turnbull said.<\/p>\n

“This is a great day for our navy, a great day for Australia’s 21st century economy, a great day for the jobs of the future.”<\/p>\n

The project is expected to generate 2800 Australian jobs.<\/p>\n

“The submarine project alone will see Australian workers building Australian submarines with Australian steel, here where we stand today,” Mr Turnbull said.<\/p>\n

Advanced manufacturing technology and skills were key to Australia’s economic future, he said.<\/p>\n

Defence Minister Marise Payne said the submarines were necessary for Australia’s national security.<\/p>\n

“It reflects the fact that we are a maritime-based trading nation and both our national and economic security are linked to the maritime environment of our region,” she said.<\/p>\n

Mr Turnbull thanked German firm ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and the Japanese government for their “high quality” bids.<\/p>\n

He said the combat system would be sourced from the United States.<\/p>\n

Senator Payne said the process had been robust, strong, methodical and rigorous.<\/p>\n

Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett said the country needed 12 submarines which were “regionally superior”.<\/p>\n

“Navy will now work with industry, strongly, to make sure we deliver on that promise to government,” he said.<\/p>\n

The winner of a $50 billion contract to build Australia’s next generation of submarines is expected to be announced within hours.<\/h3>\n

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is in line to hold a press conference around 10.30am on Tuesday, although this has not been confirmed with his office declining to comment.<\/p>\n

However, shipbuilders’ union the AMWU says it is expecting Mr Turnbull in Adelaide for the announcement.<\/p>\n

Bidders from France, Germany and Japan are up for the massive contract to replace Defence’s 20-year-old fleet of Collins Class submarines and hopes are high much of the work will be done in Adelaide to boost jobs.<\/p>\n

Treasurer Scott Morrison declined to say whether there would be an announcement on Tuesday after a cabinet phone hook-up, saying only that it was important such projects delivered tangible gains.<\/p>\n

“They’re significant expenditures of public money and we’ll be focusing on ensuring that Australians get the real benefit of that for jobs and growth in the future,” he told ABC radio.<\/p>\n

French Defence shipbuilder DCNS is offering a Shortfin Barracuda submarine designed specifically for the Australian navy.<\/p>\n

A Japanese consortium led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries proposes a longer version of the Soryu Class submarine while Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems is pushing the 89-metre Type 216.<\/p>\n
