It\u2019s most common in people with compromised immune systems, including the very young, the very old and those with chronic diseases like cancer or diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being the ninth highest cause of disease-related deaths in the US, only a minority of people actually know what it is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sepsis.org\/news\/2015\/americans_more_aware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Sepsis Alliance survey<\/a> found that only 47 per cent of Americans were aware of sepsis, while 86 per cent were aware of Ebola and 76 per cent were aware of malaria.<\/p>\n<p>But knowing what sepsis is \u2013 and what signs to look for \u2013 could save your life one day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sepsis\/pdfs\/sepsis-fact-sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Centre for Disease Control<\/a> has broken the symptoms of sepsis down into a handy acronym \u2013 SEPSIS.<\/p>\n<p>S &#8211; Shivering, fever, or feeling very cold<br><br \/>\n\tE &#8211; Extreme pain or general discomfort, as in \u201cworst ever\u201d<br><br \/>\n\tP &#8211; Pale or discoloured skin<br><br \/>\n\tS &#8211; Sleepy, difficult to wake up or confused<br><br \/>\n\tI &#8211; \u201cI feel like I might die\u201d<br><br \/>\n\tS &#8211; Shortness of breath<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/rowey-bicks\/adelaide-crows-got-their-team-selection-wrong\">ADELAIDE CROWS MADE ONE BIG MISTAKE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/rowey-bicks\/former-power-star-kane-cornes-joins-fiveaa-drive-show\">KANE CORNES STARTS A NEW GIG AT FIVEAA<\/a><\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image | Bob D&#8217;Amico\/Getty Oscar-winner Patty Duke\u2019s death on Tuesday has become a major milestone in the quest to raise awareness of sepsis, says the executive director of the Sepsis Alliance in the US. \u201cThe fact that they said Patty Duke\u2019s cause of death was sepsis is relatively new,\u201d Thomas Heymann told the Huffington Post.
