Have you ever read an email and got that nagging feeling the sender is trying to send you some kind of hidden message\u2026 something they don\u2019t want to come right out and say?<\/h3>\n

Chances are that\u2019s exactly what they were doing.<\/p>\n

Tech author Minda Zetlin<\/a> has outlined the passive-aggressive email phrases people use most \u2013 mainly because they work so well.<\/p>\n

1. “Thanks in advance.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTranslation: I’m already thanking you for doing me this favour, even though you haven’t yet agreed to it. Therefore, you must do it,\u201d Minda wrote for Inc.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n

2. ” … I’d be most grateful.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another way of putting pressure on someone by thanking them in advance.<\/p>\n

3. “Can I send you some information?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

A classic sales technique, according to Minda. Asking for permission commits the reader to paying attention to the next email that follows.<\/p>\n

4. “Any interest in … ?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another effective sales technique. Replying \u2018yes\u2019 may leave you feeling obligated to buy something, but replying \u2018no\u2019 will make you feel like you’re missing out an opportunity.<\/p>\n

5. “Looking forward to … “<\/strong><\/p>\n

Minda\u2019s translation: I’m already looking forward to your positive response. If I don’t get it, I’ll be disappointed.<\/p>\n

6. “I hope you don’t mind … “<\/strong><\/p>\n

A red flag, says Minda. It probably means the person writing has already done something they should\u2019ve asked permission for.<\/p>\n

7. “Just wondering … “<\/strong><\/p>\n

Usually prefaces an unreasonable request.<\/p>\n

8. “Checking in.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Translation: I’m going to keep sending you emails about this until you respond.<\/p>\n

9. “I don’t mean to be a pest.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Always a lie, says Minda.<\/p>\n

10. “FYI.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Can be innocuous, but can also be used when forwarding a message that a recipient might be unhappy about.<\/p>\n

11. “Let me clarify.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Translation: You completely misunderstood my last message, you idiot!<\/p>\n

12. “Sorry for being unclear.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Minda, this one can often mean: “You didn’t really read what I wrote. Pay more attention this time!”<\/p>\n

13. “All the best.”<\/strong> <\/p>\n

A subtle way to end an email conversation. In other words: goodbye.<\/p>\n
