It was St. Patrick\u2019s Day this week, and to pay tribute, Thom Dunn from Upworthy<\/a> decided to point out the common words we use every day, which we owe to the Irish.<\/h3>\n

It turns out there\u2019s been a lot more Anglicising of the Irish language than most of us realise, according to Thom.<\/p>\n

Here are 10 of the most common examples.<\/p>\n

1. Slogan<\/strong>

\n\tFrom “slua,” meaning “crowd,” and “gairm,” meaning “call.”<\/p>\n

2. Galore<\/strong>

\n\tFrom “go leor,” which means “until many.”<\/p>\n

3. Hooligan<\/strong>

\n\tDerived from stereotypical depictions of the Irish as rowdy drunken brawlers, according to Thom, similar to “paddy wagon.”<\/p>\n

4. Smithereens<\/strong>

\n\tMeans “little pieces,” a combination of “smiodar” for “debris” and “\u00edn,” a common Irish suffix for “small” that has been Anglicised to “een.” <\/p>\n

5. Clan<\/strong>

\n\tMeans “family.”<\/p>\n

6. Swanky<\/strong>

\n\tThis comes from “s\u00f3cmhainn\u00ed,” which means “assets,” or “somhaoineach” for “profitable.” <\/p>\n

7. Whiskey<\/strong>

\n\tComes from “uisce beatha,” which means “water of life.”<\/p>\n

8. Kibosh<\/strong>

\n\tAccording to the Online Etymology Dictionary<\/a>, this word most likely comes from “caipin,” or “cap,” and “bh\u00e1is,” or death \u2014 literally “death cap,” which is the Irish name for a candlesnuffer. <\/p>\n

9. Phony<\/strong>

\n\tMost likely<\/a> comes from “f\u00e1inne,” an Irish word for a ring, and refers to a con called a “Fawney Rig.” A Fawney Rig involves selling a fake ring for more than it\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n

10. Keening<\/strong>

\n\tA version of the Irish word “caoineadh,” which means to cry or wail, usually for the dead.<\/p>\n
