Slogan<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\tFrom &#8220;slua,&#8221; meaning &#8220;crowd,&#8221; and &#8220;gairm,&#8221; meaning &#8220;call.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Galore<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\tFrom &#8220;go leor,&#8221; which means &#8220;until many.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Hooligan<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\tDerived from stereotypical depictions of the Irish as rowdy drunken brawlers, according to Thom, similar to &#8220;paddy wagon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Smithereens<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\tMeans &#8220;little pieces,&#8221; a combination of &#8220;smiodar&#8221; for &#8220;debris&#8221; and &#8220;\u00edn,&#8221; a common Irish suffix for &#8220;small&#8221; that has been Anglicised to &#8220;een.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Clan<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\tMeans &#8220;family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Swanky<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\tThis comes from &#8220;s\u00f3cmhainn\u00ed,&#8221; which means &#8220;assets,&#8221; or &#8220;somhaoineach&#8221; for &#8220;profitable.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Whiskey<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\tComes from &#8220;uisce beatha,&#8221; which means &#8220;water of life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Kibosh<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?allowed_in_frame=0&amp;search=kibosh\">According to the Online Etymology Dictionary<\/a>, this word most likely comes from &#8220;caipin,&#8221; or &#8220;cap,&#8221; and &#8220;bh\u00e1is,&#8221; or death \u2014 literally &#8220;death cap,&#8221; which is the Irish name for a candlesnuffer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Phony<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?term=phony&amp;allowed_in_frame=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Most likely<\/a> comes from &#8220;f\u00e1inne,&#8221; an Irish word for a ring, and refers to a con called a &#8220;Fawney Rig.&#8221; A Fawney Rig involves selling a fake ring for more than it\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.
