Scientists say they may have discovered the secret behind why the notorious Bermuda Triangle has been the site of so many ship disappearances.<\/h3>\n

Craters up to 800 metres wide and 45 metres deep \u2013 created by methane build under the sea floor, which then blasts through the seabed and into the water above \u2013 have been discovered off the coast of Norway.<\/p>\n

While the craters are not near the Bermuda Triangle, it\u2019s believed they could explain its bizarre reputation.<\/p>\n

\u201cMultiple giant craters exist on the sea floor in an area in the west-central Barents Sea … and are probably a cause of enormous blowouts of gas,\u201d researchers from the Arctic University of Norway told the Sunday Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe crater area is likely to represent one of the largest hot spots for shallow marine methane release in the Arctic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The blasts have been previously proposed as a possible Bermuda Triangle explanation by Igor Yelstov from the Trofimuk Institute.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a version that the Bermuda Triangle is a consequence of gas hydrates reactions,\u201d he said in 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey start to actively decompose with methane ice turning into gas. It happens in an avalanche-like way, like a nuclear reaction, producing huge amounts of gas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat makes the ocean heat up and ships sink in its waters mixed with a huge proportion of gas,\u201d Mr Yelstov said.<\/p>\n
