{"id":19107,"date":"2016-03-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-07T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/scientists-may-have-discovered-new-species-4000-metres-under-the-sea\/"},"modified":"2016-03-07T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-07T00:00:00","slug":"scientists-may-have-discovered-new-species-4000-metres-under-the-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/scientists-may-have-discovered-new-species-4000-metres-under-the-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists may have discovered a new species 4000 metres under the sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>Image | <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\/okeanos\/explorations\/ex1603\/logs\/mar2\/mar2.html\" target=\"_blank\">NOAA<\/a><\/h6>\n<h3>Researchers in Hawaii have encountered a \u201cghostlike octopod\u201d in the Pacific Ocean, which they believe may be part of a previously unknown species.<\/h3>\n<p>The octopod \u2013 being referred to by some as Casper The Ghost Octopus \u2013 was discovered by the remotely operated Deep Discover vehicle on 27 February.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH HERE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Michael Vecchione from the National Marine Fisheries Service described the moment the octopod was discovered on the <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\/okeanos\/explorations\/ex1603\/logs\/mar2\/mar2.html\" target=\"_blank\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;As the ROV was traversing a flat area of rock interspersed with sediment at 4,290 meters, it came across a remarkable little octopod sitting on a flat rock dusted with a light coat of sediment,\u201d Mr Vecchione said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe appearance of this animal was unlike any published records and was the deepest observation ever for this type of cephalopod.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Scientists may have discovered a new species 4000 metres under the sea | FIVEAA\" title=\"Scientists may have discovered a new species 4000 metres under the sea | FIVEAA\" height=\"449\" width=\"800\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/casper2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>Image | <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\/okeanos\/explorations\/ex1603\/logs\/mar2\/mar2.html\" target=\"_blank\">NOAA<\/a><\/h6>\n<h3>Mr Vecchione explained what was so unusual about the octopod.<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;A distinctive characteristic was that the suckers were in one, rather than two, series on each arm. This animal was particularly unusual because it lacked the pigment cells, called chromatophores, typical of most cephalopods, and it did not seem very muscular,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis resulted in a ghostlike appearance, leading to a comment on social media that it should be called Casper, like the friendly cartoon ghost.
