During the week Bugatti released its latest vehicle, the Chiron, at the Geneva International Motor Show, and people are already calling it the last truly great motorcar.<\/h3>\n

That\u2019s because it flies in the face of what every other automaker is trying to do these days, and probably even Bugatti won\u2019t make something like this again.<\/p>\n

While manufacturers are busy developing efficient, autonomous and connected cars, Bugatti has thumbed its nose at the latest trends, and built something that is almost the complete opposite.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not talking about transportation,\u201d Bugatti boss Wolfgang D\u00fcrheimer told Wired<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking about being very fast, being very unusual, being top of the top.\u201d<\/p>\n

This has always been the case at Bugatti \u2013 a company where the pursuit of perfection takes priority over consumer preferences.<\/h3>\n

The Chiron\u2019s predecessor, the Veyron, has been called the most extreme automobile ever built.<\/p>\n

It was the fastest, most powerful, most lavishly appointed car available at any price, according to Wired auto writer Alex Davies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts specifications are legendary: 1,200 horsepower, a top speed of 268.9 mph, and an average price of (US) $2.6 million,\u201d Davies says of the Veyron.<\/p>\n

Only 450 were built, and every single one of them was sold\u2026 for a loss, according to Davies.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut profit was never the point. The Veyron was born of one man\u2019s relentless pursuit of the best, regardless of time or cost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

And now the Chiron raises the stakes again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Chiron was designed to surpass the Veyron in every aspect,\u201d writes Davies.<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe engineering brief could be summed up as \u201cmore.\u201d It is faster, more comfortable, more elegant, more unconscionably and unfathomably powerful.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts massive 16-cylinder engine produces 1,500 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts top speed remains unknown, but software will limit customers to 261 mph.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt starts at (US) $2.6 million, and the deposit that secures your place in line would buy you a Lamborghini Hurac\u00e0n.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a whole lotta car. Here are some construction fun facts:<\/p>\n

– Each Chiron takes a team of 20 people nine months to assemble.

\n\t– Building the chassis alone takes six days.

\n\t– Painting each Chiron takes up to three weeks.

\n\t– Polishing it takes two days.

\n\t– Then it is rolled into a special room and illuminated from every angle to check for blemishes.

\n\t– Then it\u2019s polished again. At that rate, Bugatti expects to build 50 cars a year.<\/p>\n

Bugatti expects to build 500 Chirons over the next 10 years. But then what\u2026 will we ever see another car like this again?<\/h3>\n

Davies doesn\u2019t think so, thanks to the talking, self-driving, electrically propelled vehicles he expects to become commonplace in the future.<\/p>\n

He writes:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Chiron is one hell of a car, perhaps the last truly great automobile. But the century-long first act of the automotive story is ending. We couldn\u2019t ask for a more powerful closing scene.\u201d<\/p>\n
