Scientists generally agree that the universe is expanding, but if the rate of expansion accelerates, as some believe is the case, it spells trouble\u2026<\/h3>\n

Many scientists believe that in that situation (a universe expanding at an accelerating rate) the cosmos will end a \u201cbig rip\u201d \u2013 where the fabric of space-time tears itself apart and everything simply ceases to exist.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s like the opposite of a \u201cbig bang\u201d.<\/p>\n

But it turns out we have a while to prepare for this scenario. A study<\/a> by a team of scientists at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, calculates when such an event would be likely to occur.<\/p>\n

They found that the earliest a big rip could occur is 2.8 billion years from now, according to New Scientist<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re safe,\u201d senior researcher Diego Saez-Gomez said.<\/h3>\n

The same team discovered that the latest such an event could occur is essentially \u201cinfinity\u201d \u2013 meaning, in that case, the universe would be more likely to disappear when the sun burns out in about 5 billion years.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to know which scenario is preferable.<\/p>\n

So how did the scientists come up with 2.8 billion years?<\/p>\n

According to New Scientist, they \u201cmodelled a variety of scenarios and used the latest expansion data to calculate a likely timeline\u201d. This data involved nearby galaxies, supernovae and ripples in the density of matter\u2026<\/p>\n

Whatever that is. But even so, it’s incredibly fascinating\/scary.<\/p>\n
