After decades of research into the minds of serial killers, psychologists and neuroscientists now say they understand the triggers that can lead psychopaths to kill, including a specific genetic abnormality.<\/h3>\n

Extensive research compiled by a website called Best Counselling Degrees<\/a> and recently shared widely online quotes Dr Helen Morrison, a forensic psychiatrist in Chicago.<\/p>\n

She has interviewed 135 serial killers and says in many cases the killers had an extra chromosome in their DNA.<\/p>\n

Two of Dr Morrison\u2019s example cases are of particular interest, reports the Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The first is Bobby Joe Long, currently on death row in Florida for sexually assaulting and murdering at least 10 women, who has an extra X chromosome.<\/p>\n

The abnormality meant Long\u2019s body produced an excessive amount of oestrogen during puberty, causing him to grow breasts much to his embarrassment.<\/h3>\n

Dr Morrison\u2019s second example is Richard Speck, who murdered eight student nurses in Chicago, and had an extra Y chromosome.<\/p>\n

Serial killers tend to become detached from the rest of the world at an early age, which leads them to feel a lack of empathy, says Dr Morrison.<\/p>\n

The freshly published data also quotes Professor Jim Fallon who is a neuroscientist at the University of California.<\/p>\n

Professor Fallon studies the brains of psychopaths using brain imaging and has found low activity in the orbital cortex appears linked to sociopathic behaviour, including the inability to suppress rage and violence.<\/p>\n

In a surprising twist, while studying scans of his own brain, Professor Fallon discovered he had the same low orbital cortex activity associated with serial killers.<\/p>\n

This has led the professor to believe that childhood experiences can act as a trigger, combining with these other factors, to turn someone into a serial killer.<\/p>\n

Professor Fallon explained his opinion in The Guardian in 2014<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy, in the light of the fact I have all of the biological markers for psychopathy, including a turned off limbic system, the high risk genetic alleles, and the attendant behaviours, including well over half of those listed in the psychopathy tests and low emotional empathy, did I turn out to be a successful professor and family man?\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne most likely reason is that although I have the genetic makeup of a \u2018born\u2019 psychopath, some of those very same \u2018risk\u2019 genes in someone showered with love (versus abuse or abandonment), from childbirth through the critical first few years of life, appear to offset the psychopathy-inducing effects of the other \u2018risk\u2019 genes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s scary stuff, but the hope is that the more we know about what makes a serial killer, the easier it will be to identify one.<\/p>\n
