Messenger editor-in-chief and FIVEAA regular Jessica Leo<\/a> has taken aim Adelaide\u2019s increasingly unruly cyclists \u2013 but it isn\u2019t all their fault, she says.<\/h3>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve given cyclists a metre and they\u2019ve taken a mile,\u201d Leo has written in an opinion piece for The Advertiser<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Her article is a takedown of the controversial road rules introduced last year, which allow cyclists to ride on footpaths and require motorists to leave a one-metre gap when passing cyclists. <\/p>\n

\u201cAfter a decent amount of giving them a red hot go, I\u2019m ready to break away from the peloton and declare them a bust,\u201d Leo wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cTraffic at a standstill? Don\u2019t worry, these cocky cyclists will zoom past stationary vehicles \u2014 not leaving a one-metre gap mind you \u2014 and butt into intersections.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr, when they encounter a red light they just tip their wheel up on the kerb and enact their government-given right to ride on the footpath and take their turn no matter what the colour of the traffic signal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo said she was seeing cyclists weave between traffic spaces far narrower than the one-metre distance mandated for drivers.<\/h3>\n

\u201cIf I were to roll down my window just to lean against your bike, I sense things might end differently,\u201d she wrote. \u201cDitto should I decide I\u2019ve had enough of waiting for the lights to change and mount my Corolla onto the kerb.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Leo said cyclists were only acting according to the new laws and instead laid blame for the traffic chaos with the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fault here lies with the State Government who passed these laws based on recommendations of a citizens\u2019 jury. Namely, 37 everyday folk like you and me who met five times over a two-month period to chat about how to make our roads safer for cyclists.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not in the science business but to me, 37 people isn\u2019t a very broad sample size,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI implore the Government to repeal these laws and let common sense prevail instead.\u201d<\/p>\n
