Giant consumer brand Johnson & Johnson has been ordered by a US court to pay more than AU$100 million to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer, which she had blamed on the company\u2019s talcum powder.<\/h3>\n

The deceased woman, Jacqueline Fox, died last year \u2013 two years after she was diagnosed \u2013 and her son Marvin Salter became plaintiff in the case after her death.<\/p>\n

Ms Fox\u2019s suit claimed that her use of Johnson\u2019s products containing talcum powder, including their Baby Powder, over 35 years for feminie hygiene purposes had contributed to her cancer.<\/p>\n

A jury found that the company had failed to warn the public and conspired to hide the truth, despite researchers saying there is insufficient evidence to prove a link between using talcum powder and ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n

“We have no higher responsibility than the health and safety of consumers and we are disappointed with the outcome of the trial,” Johnson & Johnson said in a statement.<\/h3>\n

“We sympathise with the plaintiff’s family but firmly believe the safety of cosmetic talc is supported by decades of scientific evidence.”<\/p>\n

Johnson & Johnson is expected to appeal the verdict.<\/p>\n

But one of the jurors on the case, Jerome Kendrick, said internal company memos had \u201csealed my opinion\u201d about the company\u2019s liability, reports Fairfax<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“They tried to cover up and influence the boards that regulate cosmetics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

“They could have at least put a warning label on the box but they didn’t. They did nothing.”<\/p>\n

Lead attorney in the Fox suit, Jim Onder, said Johnson & Johnson had spent 30 years preparing for litigation over their talcum powder.<\/p>\n

“All their internal documents show that they knew talc caused ovarian cancer, and actively undertook to hide the truth, not only from the governmental regulators but from the public,” Mr Onder said.<\/p>\n

The Cancer Council of NSW says there is \u201cinsufficient evidence\u201d to conclude the use of talcum powder can cause ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n

“Asbestos free talc, such as that found in modern talcum powder has been suggested to increase the risk of ovarian cancer in women who apply talcum powder regularly in the genital area,” according to the council\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Several studies in women have looked at the possible link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, with mixed findings. Some studies report a slightly increased risk, while others have found no increase.”<\/p>\n
