{"id":19318,"date":"2016-02-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/popular-heartburn-medication-linked-to-dementia\/"},"modified":"2016-02-18T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-02-18T00:00:00","slug":"popular-heartburn-medication-linked-to-dementia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/popular-heartburn-medication-linked-to-dementia\/","title":{"rendered":"Popular heartburn medication linked to dementia"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>A German study has uncovered a link between a popular medication prescribed to combat indigestion and an increased risk of dementia.<\/h3>\n<p>Researchers found that people aged 75 or older who regularly take proton pump inhibitors (or PPIs) could have a 44 per cent increased risk of the disease, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/health\/12159116\/Indigestion-drugs-taken-by-millions-linked-to-dementia.html?sf21035183=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>PPIs work by lowering the amount of acid produced in the stomach and are commonly used to provide relief from heartburn, acid reflux and peptic ulcers.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2013\/14 financial year, 19 million prescriptions for PPIs were written in Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.org.au\/publications\/health-professional\/medicinewise-news\/2015\/proton-pump-inhibitors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports NPS MedicineWise<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The German study was based on the insurance data of 74,000 people over 75 from 2004 to 2011 and identified 2,950 patients who had both developed dementia and regularly taken PPIs.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers calculated that these people had a 44 per cent increased risk compared to those who had not taken PPIs, but admitted there is still work to do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The present study can only provide a statistical association between PPI use and risk of dementia,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/archneur.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?articleid=2487379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the study\u2019s authors wrote in the JAMA Neurology journal<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe possible underlying causal biological mechanism has to be explored in future studies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The avoidance of PPI medication may contribute to the prevention of dementia,&#8221; they concluded.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr Laura Phipps from Alzheimer&#8217;s Research UK said scientists now needed to find reasons for the link.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This study doesn&#8217;t tell us definitively that the drugs directly cause the condition,\u201d she said. \u201cThe next step will be to investigate the possible reasons for this link.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/sport\/power-coach-ken-hinkley-slams-offensive-and-disrespectful-reports-of-meddling\">KEN HINKLEY HITS BACK AT \u201cOFFENSIVE\u201d REPORTS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/sport\/caroline-wozniacki-appears-naked-in-sports-illustrated-bodypaint-photos\">TENNIS STAR GOES TOTALLY NAKED FOR SWIMSUIT PHOTO SHOOT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A German study has uncovered a link between a popular medication prescribed to combat indigestion and an increased risk of dementia.
