A cafe sign has gone viral, after it was photographed on Australia Day, stirring outrage.<\/h3>\n

This beachside cafe has gone viral, after it managed to upset customers and passers by on Australia Day\u2026<\/p>\n

The sign was put out on Aus Day eve at Mister Jones Espresso Bar in Bermagui in New South Wales. It was photographed and picked up by Facebook account \u201cMeanwhile in Australia\u201d, which has 732K followers.<\/h3>\n

Needless to say there were plenty of followers and fans who were furious and offended by the sign – the post has had over 3000 shares.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Buzzed, the administrators of \u201cMeanwhile in Australia\u201d said they uploaded the image because they were upset with the sign.<\/p>\n

\u201cI live locally and was upset that the two men who own the business had the audacity to put that statement out the front of their business the day before Australia Day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Comments flooded the post by the thousand – some angry, some approved, and some upset.<\/p>\n

In a statement to Buzzfeed, Mister Jones\u2019 owners said they were pretty shocked at the abuse they\u2019ve copped as a result of the sign:<\/p>\n

Over the last days, messages have been cascading through my email account, containing unprintable abuse and describing group plans for physical attacks.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

My voicemail account has mercifully reached capacity and I\u2019ve long stopped listening to the graphic and explicit death threats. These messages have been much more chilling than the thousands posted online.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The provocative blackboard seems innocuous now, entirely disproportionate to the scale of the hatred. Indeed, taken on face value, the blackboard was possibly the most Australian thing that one could write about \u2018Australia Day\u2019, in a country that claims to be proud of its \u2018larrikin\u2019 irreverence and self-effacing humour.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

However, in the few moments that it was displayed, the sign lifted a rock from under which so many interesting things have crawled.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

My blackboard\u2019s message was addressed to no one in particular. Arguably, it offended those who experienced a moment of self-recognition. As these individuals continue to over-react, the sign only becomes truer. The shoe clearly fit, and they wore it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Many of the online comments gloated over what they saw as my inevitable loss of business and the demise of my espresso bar. These groups and individuals threatened vandalism, arson, murder, mass violence and also threatened those who chose not to boycott. Mainstream media have also been curious about the effect that such overwhelming social media hatred might have on a small business.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

On \u2018Australia Day\u2019 morning, the door locks to my business had been drilled out and the windows glued shut.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

We opened for trade.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

It was our biggest \u2018Australia Day\u2019 crowd on record. Many people travelled from as far as Batemans Bay in the North and Merimbula in the South to drink a coffee and have a laugh. Among these supporters, we were particularly happy to welcome esteemed members from some strong, local, and largely marginalised communities.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
