Researchers from MIT, Harvard and Boston Children\u2019s Hospital have announced that they are on the verge of a cure for Type 1 diabetes after successfully transplanting insulin-producing cells into mice.<\/h3>\n

The scientists, who have published their findings in Nature Medicine and Nature Biotechnology journals, were also able to prevent the recipient immune systems from rejecting the cells.<\/p>\n

Once implanted in mice, the cells began producing insulin in response to blood glucose levels and were able to maintain blood glucose within a healthy range for 174 days – the length of the study.<\/p>\n

Julia Greenstein from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation said these \u201cencapsulation therapies have the potential to be groundbreaking for people with Type 1 diabetes\u201d.<\/h3>\n

\u201cThese treatments aim to effectively establish long-term insulin independence and eliminate the daily burden of managing the disease for months, possibly years, at a time without the need for immune suppression,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cJDRF is excited by these findings and we hope to see this research progress into human clinical trials and ultimately a potential new Type 1 diabetes therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Associate professor at MIT and senior author of the research Daniel Anderson said: \u201cWe are excited by these results, and are working hard to advance this technology to the clinic.\u201d<\/h3>\n

In Australia approximately 130,000 people are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and the country has the seventh highest prevalence of the disorder in children aged 0-14 years.<\/p>\n

Unlike Type 2, Type 1 diabetes has nothing to do with lifestyle or weight.<\/p>\n
