Indigenous journalist Stan Grant has delivered a hard-hitting speech in which he said the \u201cAustralian dream is rooted in racism\u201d and recalled the nation\u2019s \u201cwar of extermination\u201d against indigenous people.<\/h3>\n

Filmed speaking at a debate in October, but only uploaded to Facebook last Thursday, Grant said the Adam Goodes booing scandal of 2015 had forced the country to look into its soul and \u201cface itself\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t speak for what lay in the hearts of the people who booed Adam Goodes, but I can tell you what we heard\u2026 we heard a howl of humiliation that echoes across two centuries of disposition, injustice, suffering and survival,\u201d he said at the Ethics Centre in Sydney.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe heard the howl of the Australian dream and it said to us again, \u2018You\u2019re not welcome.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant quoted from Dorothea Mackellar\u2019s famous poem \u2018My Country\u2019, saying \u201c\u2019A land of sweeping plains, of rugged mountain ranges\u2019 reminds me that my people were killed on those plains.\u201d<\/h3>\n

\u201cWe were shot on those plains, disease ravaged us on those plains. I come from those plains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Grant said in the 1820s soldiers and settlers had waged a \u201cwar of extermination against my people\u2026 that was the language used at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWomen and children were herded over those ranges to their deaths.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Australian dream is rooted in racism,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the very foundation of the dream. It is there at the birth of the nation. It is there in terra nullius.\u201d<\/p>\n
