Australian honeys are the most contaminated in the world and contain natural poisons linked to cancer, according to new research.<\/h3>\n

A report published in the Food Additives and Contaminants journal recommends that pregnant and breastfeeding women in particular should be wary.<\/p>\n

The report maintains that many of the leading honey brands available in Aussie supermarkets would not pass the safety standards of the European Food Safety Authority \u2013 in fact, only five Australian brands would.<\/p>\n

Honey sourced from certain plants is banned in Australia, but the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) allows the use of restricted plants in honey production if it is blended with other honey to dilute it.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemoving source plants is not feasible for many areas where apiaries are kept,\u201d a FSANZ spokesperson has told Fairfax.<\/p>\n

\u201cContaminants should be kept as low as achievable, therefore blending is the most practical way of reducing the levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Australian toxicologist Dr John Edgar told Fairfax that exposure to these poisons could be a significant cause of cancer.<\/p>\n

The Australian honey industry says it is aware of the threat posed by Paterson’s curse honey<\/h6>\n

\u201cReducing the contamination in foods such as honey, teas, salads, flour, dairy and herbal products could result in a significant reduction in cancer cases worldwide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Australian Honeybee Industry Association says the report is exaggerated because it assumes larger honey consumption and lower body weight than is normal in Australia.<\/p>\n

“Industry is fully aware of the problem with Paterson’s curse honey and alkaloid content,” a spokesperson said. “This honey is not produced in commercial quantities in Australia.”<\/p>\n

“There is not one single case documented of human health being unfavourably affected as a consequence of the consumption of honey containing very low levels of alkaloids.<\/p>\n

“Australian consumers of Australian honey have nothing to fear and they should continue to enjoy our great Australian honeys.”<\/p>\n
