Australia\u2019s two giant supermarkets have been fined thousands of dollars and convicted under the National Measurement Act for selling products that weighed less than was promised on the package.<\/h3>\n

Woolworths was fined $3000 for making and selling mock cream sponge cakes that weighed up to 41 per cent less than promised.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for Woolworths said it was an isolated event due to human error at its Maroochydore store in Queensland.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe implemented refresher training to ensure high standards are maintained when supplying great value and quality products to our customers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Coles meanwhile received a $3000 fine for using a weighing instrument that led to shortfalls of up to 9.4 per cent in prepacked lamb chops.<\/p>\n

A Coles spokesman said the case involved one product in one store.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe issue, which resulted from a piece of fresh meat sticking to an automatic cutting and weighing machine between slices, was quickly corrected and no wrongly labelled items were sold to customers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cColes takes its trade measurement responsibilities very seriously and has robust operational and compliance systems in place in every one of its stores right around Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2014-15 the National Measurement Institute issued 3962 non-compliance notices, up 13 per cent on the previous year’s figure, and imposed 98 fines totalling $92,650.<\/p>\n

Nearly half of the breaches related to underweight or incorrectly labelled packaged products.<\/p>\n

For the first time, traders were prosecuted under the National Measurement Act, resulting in four convictions.<\/p>\n

Also convicted along with Coles and Woolworths was Santoshi International and Musher Saleh of Lakemba Jewellery.<\/p>\n
