Workers across Europe are on notice after the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) upheld an employer\u2019s right to read employees\u2019 private communications sent through social media services like Facebook and Twitter, as well as personal email accounts.<\/h3>\n

The ruling was made in a case involving a Romanian engineer who was fired in 2007 for using Yahoo Messenger to chat with his family.<\/p>\n

The engineer argued that his former employer had violated his right to confidential correspondence, but this was rejected by the court.<\/p>\n

\u201c(It was not) unreasonable that an employer would want to verify that employees were completing their professional tasks during working hours\u201d, the court said.<\/p>\n

The ECHR judges also defended the way Romanian courts allowed transcripts of the engineer\u2019s communications to be used against him in court.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt proved that he had used the company\u2019s computer for his own private purposes during working hours,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

The ECHR\u2019s judgments are binding on countries that have ratified the European Convention on Human Rights.<\/p>\n
