NASA has created a new department to protect the planet from potential doomsday asteroids, saying recent close calls are a reminder we need to remain vigilant.<\/h3>\n

The new department is called the Planetary Defense Coordination Office and its job is to detect and track near-earth objects.<\/p>\n

If an asteroid can\u2019t be deflected, the new office will work with other agencies and nations to help people located in impact zones.<\/p>\n

The head of the new department, Planetray Defense Officer Lindley Johnson, was executive of NASA\u2019s Near-Earth Object Program, which is now part of the new office.<\/p>\n

“The formal establishment of the Planetary Defense Coordination Office makes it evident that the agency is committed to perform a leadership role in national and international efforts for detection of these natural impact hazards, and to be engaged in planning if there is a need for planetary defense,” Mr Johnson said.<\/p>\n

NASA reports that it detects about 1,500 new near-Earth objects every year, and believes it has found 90 percent of the objects that are 3,000 feet or bigger.<\/p>\n

The new department will try to detect smaller but still potentially dangerous objects about 450 feet or larger \u2013 about 75 percent of which are currently undetected.<\/p>\n

NASA’s John Grunsfeld says “asteroid detection, tracking and defense of our planet\u201d is something NASA takes seriously.<\/p>\n

“While there are no known impact threats at this time, the 2013 Chelyabinsk super-fireball and the recent ‘Halloween Asteroid’ close approach remind us of why we need to remain vigilant and keep our eyes to the sky,” he said.<\/p>\n

The US federal budget includes $50 million for near-earth object observations and planetary defense, up from just $4 million in 2010, says NASA.<\/p>\n
