New research which the scientific community is calling “an exciting discovery” and “encouraging” may provide the key to halting Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/h3>\n

The study published in the neurology journal \u2018Brain\u2019 suggests that curbing brain inflammation may help treat or even prevent the disease.<\/p>\n

Writing for the Huffington Post, science writer Carolyn Gregoire reports:<\/p>\n

\u201cResearchers at the University of Southampton in England conducted experiments showing a chemical that reduces neuroinflammation may have the potential to protect against the memory and behavioral changes associated with Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAn overactive immune system can result in chronic inflammation, which previous research has linked to Alzheimer’s. These new findings makes it increasingly apparent that inflammation is not a result of Alzheimer’s as much as a key driver of the disease.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Lead author of the study Dr. Diego Gomez-Nicola says the next step is to start tests on humans.<\/p>\n

“We have shown a way into tackling the disease, and now it is time to progress this to the clinical setup as soon as possible,” said Dr. Diego Gomez-Nicola.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese findings are as close to evidence as we can get to show that this particular pathway is active in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe next step is to work closely with our partners in industry to find a safe and suitable drug that can be tested to see if it works in humans,\u201d said Dr. Gomez-Nicola.<\/p>\n

The research also suggests that a diet and lifestyle focused on fighting inflammation could be important in preventing Alzheimer’s, but it\u2019s too early to make recommendations.<\/p>\n
