{"id":19952,"date":"2016-01-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-07T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/dog-dies-after-it-was-left-in-hot-car-for-more-than-two-hours\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T00:00:00","slug":"dog-dies-after-it-was-left-in-hot-car-for-more-than-two-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/dog-dies-after-it-was-left-in-hot-car-for-more-than-two-hours\/","title":{"rendered":"Dog dies after it was left in a hot car for more than two hours in Cairns"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The owner of a dog that had to be put down after it was left in a car on a 36C day will face criminal charges over the matter.<\/h3>\n<p>Witnesses tried to help two dogs, which they say were visibly distressed at being left in a car parked in direct sunlight on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to put a bowl through the window and give them water,\u201d passerby Kim Cassidy said at the scene.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/dog-police2.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>Image | Police try to assist one of the dogs | The Cairns Post<\/h6>\n<h3>\u201cWe\u2019ve been here for an hour in 36-degree heat,&#8221; she said.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to know there is nothing you can do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A council officer was called to the scene when it appeared the dogs might be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth were taken immediately to the vet and unfortunately at the pound later on, the male dog was euthanised from heat exhaustion,\u201d Cairns Council chief executive Peter Tabulo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe female dog is still in care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/dog-man-police2.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>Image | Police speak with the owner of the dogs | The Cairns Post<\/h6>\n<h3>Graham John Oakes, the car\u2019s owner, had left the dogs while he attended court, and returned to find police officers who took him into custody.<\/h3>\n<p>The RSPCA\u2019s Richard Wright issued a warning about how quickly conditions inside a hot car can become dangerous for a dog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the extreme temperatures we\u2019re experiencing at the moment it can take only six minutes for a dog to die if left in a vehicle,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be very excruciating for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you do that to a person?
