{"id":20091,"date":"2015-12-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/controversial-lingerie-football-league-sparks-backlash-in-uk\/"},"modified":"2015-12-18T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-12-18T00:00:00","slug":"controversial-lingerie-football-league-sparks-backlash-in-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/sport\/controversial-lingerie-football-league-sparks-backlash-in-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Controversial Lingerie Football League sparks backlash in UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>A women\u2019s soccer team in Manchester has been criticised for dressing its players in brightly coloured skimpy outfits, but in an unexpected twist, the club says it is \u201cfighting inequality\u201d.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe know this is scandalous, we know it&#8217;s controversial,\u201d says the club\u2019s founder Gemma Hughes, \u201cbut that media attention is what&#8217;s going to sell tickets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll money made is going to be put back into women&#8217;s football and to the players,\u201d Ms Hughes has told the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/lingerie1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>Image |&nbsp;Lingerie Football League<\/h6>\n<p>The team \u2013 known as the Lingerie Football League (LFL) \u2013 wears hot pink crop tops and black hot pants, while&nbsp;claiming to close the gender pay gap by generating media coverage and public interest in the women&#8217;s game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not about the players looking beautiful or sexy, it\u2019s about women looking like women,\u201d says Ms Hughes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou only have to look at tennis \u2013 the women dress like women and they get same equal pay and similar amount of sponsorship as men.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"404\" width=\"634\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/lingerie2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>Image |&nbsp;Lingerie Football League<\/h6>\n<p>\u201cIn football the women are bound to men\u2019s rule and it\u2019s a poor imitation of the men\u2019s game,&#8221; says Ms Hughes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lack of commercial investment as a result. We want to break the stigma that football is just for tomboys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But many don\u2019t agree. Tracey Halpin, coach of a Manchester girls team, says the LFL are not setting a good example.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"404\" width=\"634\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/lingerie3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>Image |&nbsp;Lingerie Football League<\/h6>\n<p>\u201cI think it is sexist for a number of reasons,\u201d says Ms Halpin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy else would men come and watch women play in their lingerie? It wouldn\u2019t be for the reason to watch them play football.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems like a crazy, crazy thing.
