It’s something that we’ve all been guilty of… But this bad habit may have a silver lining.<\/h3>\n

Researchers at the University of Montreal have discovered that bitting your nails is a sign of perfectionism. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that individuals with these repetitive behaviours may be perfectionistic, meaning that they are unable to relax and to perform a task at a \u2018normal\u2019 pace. They are therefore prone to frustration, impatience and dissatisfaction when they do not reach their goals,\u201d according to the researchers. <\/p>\n

The studies involved 48 participants, half whom regularly bite their nails and the other half who don\u2019t. The study concludes that it is emotions that force people to partake in these habits: \u201cThe positive effects of the habits are stimulation and a way of regulating emotion. What triggers the habit is largely frustration and impatience so the action substitutes for more constructive action.\u201d<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re a nail bitter, turn out it’s just a way to channel your energy as you eagerly wait for inspiration.<\/p>\n
