An Aussie living in Scotland has said she thought it was a joke at first when a landlord rejected her rental application because he believes Australians are \u201cfamous\u201d for being racists and drunks.<\/h3>\n

\u201cIt is well known in Europe that Australians are racist,\u201d the landlord wrote to Laura Gratton, 24, when she applied online to rent a flat in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact around the world your people are famous for this. Just as France is famous for wine and cheese. Australia is famous for its drunks and racists. I’m sorry I need to reject this request,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Laura fired back at the landlord, turning the tables and accusing him of racism, adding she thought he should visit Australia for himself.<\/h3>\n

\u201cYou obviously are quite racist putting such labels and speculations on a whole race without knowing the individual,\u201d she wrote in reply.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe majority of my closest friends are from across the globe so would hate to think I’m racist. So thank you for rejecting this email, I don’t think we would get along at all. And I suggest you actually visit Australia and realise how multicultural we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura says she thought the landlord\u2019s comments were a joke before realising he was serious.<\/h3>\n

\u201cI was angry and frustrated that someone could think like this and say it to me just because of where I was from,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAustralia is a multi-cultural and very accepting country. There are race issues like any other country – but the actions of a few shouldn’t be used to judge anyone from that country.<\/h3>\n

\u201cThis was my first encounter of such strong negative and offensive stereotyping on my travels. I have heard the odd joke about drinking to do with Australians or Irish people but it has only ever been jokes among friends, never anything intended to hurt like this,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
